Translate the form into Spanish. Add a Mandarin option to the portal. Check the box.

It doesn’t work that way.

Translation converts words from one language to another. Localization adapts the entire experience: tone, visuals, cultural context, and underlying assumptions so that it feels natural and trustworthy to the person receiving it. These are not the same thing and conflating them produces materials that are technically accurate and practically useless.

Consider what gets lost in translation alone. A term with a clear clinical meaning in English may carry stigma, have no neutral equivalent, or map onto a completely different cultural understanding of the body in another language. A patient support form designed around a private insurance model may be incomprehensible to someone whose entire healthcare experience has been within a state-run system. An image chosen for its neutrality in one culture may carry unintended meaning in another; in some Asian cultures red text on a name carries associations with death.

Genuine cultural competency goes further still. It asks not just whether the words are correct but whether the communication respects the patient’s relationship to healthcare, their community’s specific barriers to access, and the trust, or mistrust, they bring to the interaction.

Diverse patient populations are not a communications afterthought. They are disproportionately the populations that patient access programs exist to serve: facing higher rates of chronic disease, greater financial barriers, and deeper systemic mistrust of healthcare institutions.

Meeting them where they are is not a diversity initiative.

It is the work.

Translation converts words from one language to another.
